My Great-Grandfather's Art

I just got back from San Diego, and was finally able to see the mural that my great grandfather painted at the Air & Space Museum there. It's called the March of Transportation, and covers transportation through the prehistoric times, up to what he envisioned transportation would look like in the year 2000. It's the largest mural in all of North and South America, and the 3rd largest mural in the world! It's over 10,000 square feet, so I obviously couldn't photograph the whole thing...but here are some shots that I took. Pretty cool, huh?

Here's what the museum writes about it:

Over 10,000 square feet of murals were painted on the building's interior walls. Designed by famed Mexican artist Juan Larrinaga and entitled The March Of Transportation, the principle mural chronicles man’s ideas and methods of transportation through history, offering insight into what the artists of the 1930s predicted for the future of transportation.

Purse Organizer

I work in a really bad area, and choose to take public transportation. As such, I always try to be prepared in case of emergency with pepper spray, stun gun, etc. However I quickly realized last week when I had an unfortunate incident on my lunch break that it doesn't matter what I have in my purse if I can't get at it quickly while panicking. I saw a purse organizer at one of the big box stores, and decided to make my own, customized to each of the things that I carry on a daily basis. I have a pocket for my stun gun, wallet, portable vinyl shopping bag, iPod, cell phone, mini sketch book, etc.

To make it, I measured the width of my purse and doubled that measurement. I measured how high in my purse I wanted it to sit. I made three rectangles of fabric, one about 4 extra inches in width. I sewed together the two that are twice the width of my purse, and put in some recycled thin cardboard (from a pilates book/dvd set), and then used the third piece to make the pockets. I measured each item I wanted to put in and made an appropriately sized pocket. When I was finished, I sewed a loop of fabric to clip my keys to. Hopefully now I will be ready for anything that comes my way!!!

Flower Floating Candle Holders

I decided to make some of these floating flower candle holders from last summer's Adorn magazine. If you don't have it already, I highly recommend ordering the back issues. They are well worth it. You can find them at www.adornmag.com.

Anyway, I had the idea to make these and fill the pool with them for my jewelry launch party. They look simple in the instructions. However, it took me almost an hour to make just the one...not including the baking time. But I love how it came out. We'll see how many I actually finish in time for the party though. :) I do have a word of advice though in case anyone else decides to make some...

Unless you are a freak like me, be sure to remove them from the oven using pot holders. You need to create a base of foil to wrap it in while baking, and that can get hot. I realized at some point that I pull hot clay out of the oven so frequently, that I have lost the heat sensation in my right hand. I can actually pull the foil out of the oven and not feel the heat. I'm sure for anyone else (or even if I just use my other hand), this is not the best idea. :)

Polymer Clay

Anyone who has looked at my Etsy shop can see that I do a lot of work with polymer clay. (If you haven't - be sure to check it out! www.urbanconstruction.etsy.com). In case anyone is interested in working with polymer clay,
I have a few tips and favorites after years of working with the stuff.

-Sculpey clay comes in three varieties. Sculpey I, Sculpey II, and Sculpey III. These three clays are kind of like Goldilocks and the Three Bears for me.
-Sculpey I is ok to use if you need to, but it tends to be a little too dry and crumbly for my taste.
-Sculpey III is the extreme opposite, and extremely soft. I have a hard time working with this one because it is too soft. It leaves fingerprints too easily, and is hard to shape without it sticking all over your hands. The more you knead it, the more sticky it gets.
-Sculpey II is my favorite by far since it is obviously in between the other two.
-I don't seem to get what the draw is on Premo Sculpey. When I've gotten it, it was way too hard and crumbly. They offer better colors, but I usually just use the reguarly colors and mix to get my desired color anyway.
-Fimo clay is similar to Sculpey III, and too soft. It also leaves a colored residue all over your hands and workspace! Not fun.
-The only color of the Sculpey that I have found to stain my hands temporarily is the red for some reason. Just use care when using this color, and be sure not to stain your surroundings.
-Sculpey glaze in the gloss finish is my favorite. I used to use the satin finish, until I recently discovered how beautiful the gloss finish comes out. It is super shiny and glossy. I am going to have to reglaze all of my inventory!

Craft My Ride Part 3

Along with my toiletries, I also keep spare clothes in the trunk. Sometimes I forget to bring my workout clothes with me in the morning, so I have a spare set in the back. I also have a spare set of heels in case I suddenly need to change, etc. I've actually used these twice already. Once I was wearing suede heels and it unexpectedly started to rain, so I ran back to my car to change. Last weekend, I broke a heel on an escalator, but I just ran to my car and changed into my emergency heels! I needed something to hold all of my extra outfits, so I made this box out of old record sleeves and duct tape! It fits in nicely next to my subwoofer. :)

I like to keep all of my car manuals, stereo paperwork, etc. together. I made this little booklet out of fused plastic bags to keep it all organized.

Lastly, speaking of my stereo...I needed something to keep my stereo faceplate from getting scratched in my purse. I thought that when you paid a lot for a stereo they gave you something, but oh well...this is cuter. I just sewed this out of a few sheets of felt, and it works great in my purse!

Craft My Ride Part 2

This was actually supposed to be a necklace for my website, but I decided my car would like to wear jewelry too. :) I made this Our Lady of Guadalupe to hang from my rear view window. Please be sure to check out my website for the actual necklace! www.urbanconstruction.etsy.com

I like to be prepared for anything, including a bad hair day. I keep a lot of "in case of emergency" toiletries and supplies in my car (including even a mini hair dryer that fits in the palm of my hand). I needed something cute to keep all of these supplies in, so I made this little pouch. I made a collage from magazines and clear contact paper. I covered both sides in the contact paper, and then turned it into a pouch with Velcro closure. I love it, and it's so easy to use and throw back into the back seat!

I have a little mini trash can in my car, but I also needed something for my recyclables. I made this little hanging trash bag with this cute retro tattoo fabric, lined in black vinyl. That way, if I leave a few drops of soda in a can, I don't have to worry about my cute pink fabric getting ruined!

This was also part of the Stitch - n- Bitch pattern that went along with the steering wheel cover. The fuzzy dice actually hang in the back seat, off the head rest on the passenger side. Don't ask why...it's a long story involving a joke with a few of my friends and my cat.

Craft My Ride part 1

Since sometimes I feel like I live in my car, I have to feel at home there. :) Which means my car is personalized with tons of my craft projects.

Here's a list of all of the projects I've created for my beloved car....

I am short. Very short. A little over 5'. I like to tell people I'm 5'1", but that's exaggerating slightly. When daylight savings time started, I realized I was driving home from work every day staring at the setting sun, and I am too short for the visor to be any help. So I broke down and made myself a cushion. Now the sun no longer blinds me.

I usually leave for work pretty early in the morning. This isn't so much of a problem now, but in the winter, my steering wheel was pretty cold in the morning (especially because I have to park on the street). I used the pattern in one of the Stitch -n- Bitch books, and used some faux fur eyelash yarn. I love my knitted steering wheel cover. :) It also makes it easy to spot my car in a large parking lot.

My latest completed project!

I'm on a little vacation from work this week, and one of the best things I can think of to do is to just relax at home, watch all the crafting shows on DIY network, and catch up on all of my projects! So I saw this cute project on DIY's jewelry making for a beaded bridal headband/tiara. It was really cute, except I'm not getting married any time in the near future, so I decided to adapt it for myself. :)

I don't know why, but the website says to clip off the headband teeth. On the show, they specifically were talking about how helpful those little teeth are in lining up your wire. I wanted to use a thicker plastic headband than the one they used on the show, and I happened to find one that I've had lying around since the 80's! Being that my headband is "vintage," it was missing a few of the teeth. I will say that it was much easier to wrap and line up the wire in the parts of the headband that have the teeth. So I would recommend ignoring that part of the instructions! I also skipped adding beads to the backside of the headband. Mine is obviously not going to be a tiara, so I just put the beads on the top, and skipped all of the obvious tiara parts.

In all, this was a really easy adapted project, and I completed it in one evening while watching a movie! I got a few tubes of mixed seed beads at my local craft store, used some silver tone 24 gauge wire, and I was all set! I of course used black beads since I wanted it to look nothing at all like a bridal tiara, and I think it will look perfect with a little black dress!

Fabric Clearance Sale!

For those of you that sew, knit, make jewelry, quilt, etc....you should definitely look online to see if there is a Hancock Fabrics near you. They are closing 140 stores, which is really sad. The mood was a little somber because all of these employees are loosing their jobs. I felt compelled to keep going back to offer moral support. :) The good news is I got some amazing deals! Everything is 40-60% off! I got spools of lace for like $0.40, etc. I got huge bags of fabric, trims, beads and more for around $100. I would definitely recommend checking it out! Even if it isn't right down the street from you, it is definitely worth a little drive to go stock up. Even if you won't use something right away, you know you eventually will use it!

Michael Levine's and the Fabric District

If you live anywhere in Southern California and you sew, if you haven't already, you must go into downtown LA to go shopping for fabric. I go as much as possible, and usually buy more than I can use in a reasonable amount of time. It was much worse when I actually worked in the fashion district. :) So I went downtown for a job interview, and I got there a little early. I can't go to that area and NOT buy fabric. So I figured just a quick stop at Michael Levine's and I would go along to my appointment. I found the most beautiful fabric there. It's a silk stretch silver material, and just so beautiful. It was a little pricey at $18/yard, but it was worth it. I can't wait to make a beautiful top out of it. :) I also got some really cool stretch pleather from a jobber down the street for only $3/yard!

So if you plan on going fabric shopping down there, let me give you a few tips.
1. Plan on making a day of it. There are so many places to look, you don't want to try to rush.
2. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sunglasses, wear sunscreen, and bring bottled water. Make sure you wear comfortable, lightweight clothing that isn't your nicest stuff. This isn't exactly the place to wear your latest designer duds.
3. Bring cash for parking. Make sure you park in a self-park lot where you keep your own keys. If you live in LA, take the Blue Line and/or the DASH. It will save you a ton of headaches from trying to find parking!
4. If possible, go on a weekday morning. If you only have the weekend free, go on Saturday. Sunday is the worst day of the week to try to go, hands down. Avoid going there on Sunday like the plague.
5. If you are driving, mentally prepare yourself for lots of crowded one-way streets (it's so worth it though!)
6. Be careful where you eat. :) There is a Pollo Loco and Starbucks around 9th/Santee that are good and you will come out alive.
7. Know that restrooms are very hard to find, and most are scary. I would recommend going into the building where I used to work if you need a public restroom. It's called the California Market Center, and there is a public restroom in the downstairs lobby. It's a huge building that takes up an entire city block, so you can't miss it. It's off 9th and Main, and Los Angeles, etc.
8. If you plan on buying a ton of fabric, you may want to consider bringing one of those little pull cart things that old ladies use to bring home their groceries. :)
9. Michael Levine's is the be all and end all of high end discounted fabric. They have two locations across the street from each other. One has apparel fabric, and the other has home decorating fabric. Upstairs from the home decor store is their outlet store, "The Loft." This is a must see. :) They often have sales where the fabric is $1 per pound! All of the fabric there is super cheap and sold by the pound. This is where that push cart thing would really come in handy! I've gone in there and bought pounds of fabric, and then had to carry it to the train. Not the brightest thing I've ever done, but it was worth it.
10. Other than Michael Levine's there are tons and tons of little tiny shops lining the streets. They are all "jobbers" which means they get limited amounts of fabric at discount prices. If you see something you love, and think you may need a lot of it, but all that you can when you see it. It may not be there if you come back in a few weeks, and they can't reorder anything for you.
11. Most jobbers deal in cash only, but some will take credit cards. Be careful about using your credit cards in some of these places though. They also will usually charge you less if you pay cash. Some will let you haggle if you are buying a decent amount of fabric. Prepare like you're going to a swap meet - bring lots of small bills. You can't haggle them down to $2 per yard and then hand them a $20.
12. Shop around a little before you start buying. A lot of the jobbers carry similar fabric, but some of the prices vary greatly.
13. Keep in mind what you're looking for before you start out. If you are looking for lace or bridal fabrics, there are a number of stores that carry these type of fabrics exclusively. There are other stores that carry only stretch fabrics, or primarily faux fur, lots of plaids, etc. If you're looking for something in specific, feel free to email me! I've been down there so much I practically have a mental map of all of the stores and their contents!
14. My last tip is to actually go with a map. You can find these online at http://www.fashiondistrict.org/ and printed versions in the little info stands throughout downtown. It's better to have one before you even venture down there. This map will explain to you all of the different districts in downtown and where you can find them.

My first blog!

Hi! So I am new at this whole blogging thing. Let me start off with a little introduction. I will primarily be writing about my jewelry/clothing line, Urban Construction. I will also write about any other craft projects that I happen to be up to as well. :) I make all of my jewelry by hand myself. I make a lot of polymer clay jewelry, beaded necklaces, jewelry made from repurposed items, hand drawn plastic designs, and more. The clothing isn't loaded onto my Etsy shop yet, but it will be soon.
